Two seasons, not four

Panama has no real winter or summer. Temperatures stay between 24 and 31 Celsius year round. The real distinction is dry season (December to April) and rainy season (May to November). Latitude 9 degrees north puts Panama in the classic tropical pattern.

Dry season: the classic pick

December to April. Blue skies, sunshine, cool-ish breezes, calm seas. Perfect for a canal transit cruise, a San Blas day trip, or Taboga Island. Peak January to March means higher prices and busier tours. Book 4-6 weeks ahead.

Rainy season: underrated

May to November gets a bad rap. In reality, mornings are usually sunny until 1-2 PM, then a heavy afternoon shower for 1-2 hours, then clearing by evening. Nature is greener, waterfalls in Soberania are full, and prices drop 20-40 percent. Downside: rough Caribbean seas in September and October can cancel San Blas day trips.

Cruise season

Panama cruise season runs October to April, peak January to March. Both ports (Colon and Fuerte Amador) are busiest on these months. Shore excursions sell out 2-4 weeks ahead. Book early.

When NOT to visit

September and October for Caribbean beaches (roughest seas). Semana Santa (Holy Week, March/April) for anywhere coastal (packed with local vacationers). Panamanian independence celebrations November 3 and 28 (most businesses close, traffic gridlock in Panama City).

Frequently asked questions

Dry season runs from mid-December to mid-April. Sunny days, little rain, calmer seas on both coasts. Peak tourist season is January to March with more cruises and higher hotel prices. Best conditions for canal cruises and San Blas day trips.

Not at all. Rainy season (May to November) has afternoon showers lasting 1-2 hours, usually clearing by evening. Mornings are mostly sunny. Tourists are fewer, prices are lower, and nature is greener. Only downside: rougher seas can affect canal cruises and San Blas day trips.

September and October. Lowest hotel prices, fewest tourists, and tours often run at 60-70 percent capacity. Rain is heaviest but still manageable if you plan outdoor activities for mornings.
