What are the Gatun Locks?

The Gatun Locks are the northern (Atlantic-side) lock complex of the Panama Canal. A three-stage system that raises ships 27 meters from Atlantic sea level to the surface of Gatun Lake. Completed in 1914 with the rest of the original canal. Each chamber is 305 meters long, 33 meters wide. Ships of the Panamax class (the largest size the original locks can handle) fill the chamber with inches to spare on each side.

How to visit

The public visitor access is the Agua Clara Visitor Center, opened in 2017 and overlooking both the original Gatun Locks and the new 2016 Neopanamax locks side by side. Observation deck, small museum, cafe, and gift shop. Entry $20. Open daily 8 AM to 4 PM.

Getting there

  • From Panama City: 90 minutes by road via the Corredor Norte. Taxi round trip $160-200. A guided tour with Gatun Lake boat ride is $90-140.
  • From Colon cruise port: 20 minutes by taxi ($25) or included in most shore excursions.
  • Public bus: possible but slow. Bus from Panama City Albrook terminal to Colon (2 hours, $3), then local taxi to Agua Clara ($15).

When to see ships transit

Northbound transits (Pacific to Atlantic) usually reach Gatun 3-5 PM. Southbound (Atlantic to Pacific) usually start at Gatun 9-11 AM. Check the Panama Canal website in the morning for the day schedule. Agua Clara deck stays open till 4 PM so aim for the morning southbound window if possible.

Combine with Gatun Lake

The best add-on is a Gatun Lake boat tour. A pier a few minutes from Agua Clara runs 1-hour boat rides to spot howler monkeys, capuchins, and occasional sloths. $30-50 standalone or included in most full-day tours.

Combine with Portobelo

For a full Atlantic-side day: Agua Clara in the morning, lunch in Colon or Portobelo, Portobelo UNESCO fortress in the afternoon. Back in Panama City by 7 PM. Long but satisfying.

The Gatun Locks are the Atlantic-side set of locks on the Panama Canal. A three-stage system (the largest of the original 1914 locks) that raises ships 27 meters from Atlantic sea level to Gatun Lake. Each chamber is 305 meters long and 33 meters wide.

The main visitor access is the Agua Clara Visitor Center, which overlooks both the original Gatun Locks and the new 2016 Neopanamax locks. 90 minutes from Panama City by road, 20 minutes from Colon cruise port. Entry $20, open 8 AM to 4 PM.

Both are great. Miraflores has the bigger visitor center, museum, IMAX, and is easier to reach from Panama City. Gatun via Agua Clara has the three-stage lock views and shows both the old and new (Neopanamax) locks side by side. Cruise passengers from Colon naturally visit Gatun.

Technically yes but it is a long day. Miraflores in the morning, 2-hour drive across the isthmus, Gatun in the afternoon. Budget 10 hours total. Most tours pick one. Only combine if the canal is your single priority.
