What is San Blas?

The San Blas archipelago (officially Guna Yala) is a 365-island chain in the Caribbean, on the northeastern coast of Panama. The islands are controlled by the indigenous Guna people (also spelled Kuna), who run tourism directly. White sand, turquoise water, reef snorkeling, palm trees, traditional huts. The postcard Caribbean.

Practical tips

The road from Panama City to Carti is steep, winding, and only done in 4x4. Budget 3 hours each way, sometimes more in rainy season. Motion sickness is common, take medication 30 minutes before departure. Bring cash in small USD bills for handicrafts from Kuna women. Alcohol is restricted on some community islands. Respect photo etiquette, ask before photographing Kuna people.

Combine San Blas with...

A San Blas day trip pairs poorly with other activities on the same day. Plan it as a standalone 14-hour day. If you have three days, combine with a Panama City day and a canal transit.

Frequently asked questions

Yes if you are tight on time, but an overnight in a Kuna-run lodge is much more rewarding. A day trip gives you 4-5 hours on the islands after 3 hours of driving each way. An overnight gives you sunset, stars, and a slower pace.

Day trips cost $140-220 per person including hotel pickup, 4x4 transport, park entry, boat rides to 3-4 islands, and lunch. Overnight packages start at $150 per person for one night including meals.

Swimsuit, towel, biodegradable sunscreen (standard sunscreen damages the reef), water shoes, cash in small bills (USD is accepted), and motion-sickness pills if you are prone. The roads are winding and boats are small.

You can but it is risky. May to November brings rough seas and heavy rain that can cancel boat trips. December to April is the dry season with calm water and sunny days. Book flexible cancellation if traveling in shoulder months.
